The Camillus Police Department is providing Camillus residents an easy, safe and convenient way to properly dispose of expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs by placing a permanent medication collection box at the Police Department located in the Municipal Building.
Camillus police detectives will be responsible for the collection, security and destruction of drugs from the heavy steel, locked box that works much like a bank deposit-collection device. This secure medication collection box was purchased for our residents with money seized from local drug dealers, is monitored with a video camera, will be emptied frequently and the contents placed in the police station’s vault while awaiting destruction.
Prescription drug abuse in the United States is increasing at alarming rates, especially for young adults who report they can easily obtain prescription pills from medicine cabinets in their own and other people’s homes. This type of drug abuse is a major concern in communities across our country, including Camillus. This new program will take drug disposal efforts to a new level in our town and reduce the availability of prescription drugs that have the potential to cause great harm in our community.
